Wooden Structures, Flowers and Shadows at the Beach
81This hub is a pictorial of the many types of wood and wooden structures that are commonly seen at the beach. I tried to capture the texture of the wood and the shadows that are cast by it. I also tried to find unexpected shapes and splashes of color from wildflowers, carefully planted flowers and insects that rest up against the wood. Some of the structures are common and expected- beach entrances over a sand dune, picket fences in front of beach cottages and fishing piers. Others are works of art such as colorful signs painted on wood.
The photos in this pictorial are taken from beaches in Delaware, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the Hilton Head area of South Carolina and Tybee Island, Georgia. All photos were taken by the author of this hub, Gail Sobotkin.
Wooden Structures Along Sand Dunes
Another beautiful sight is the many private entrances along sand dunes such as these wooden gazebo structures that create a distinctive line up.
A Splash of Color on Wooden Fence
This fence sits atop a giant sand dune lookout point and prevents visitors from falling off the dune. The ocean can be seen in the background. I loved the way that the texture of this wooden fence created a natural backdrop for the wild trumpet flowers growing all around it. I was also fortunate to capture a close-up shot of a dragonfly buzzing around the flower and a butterfly on one of the wooden slats.
Beach Cottage Fences With Colorful Flowers
Picket fences are common sights in front of and along side of the beach cottages near the sea. Some are painted white, some are stained in natural hues, some are high and some are low but all are beautiful when graced with colorful plantings of flowers that are carefully tended by the owners. I love to come upon half open gates which capture a tantalizing view of what's behind it. This is one of the many delights of walking to the beach.

Beach Entrances can be simple such as a basic unpainted fence that defines the walk area across a dune, or more elaborate with long wooden boardwalks, benches and gazebos but regardless of whether they're fancy or plain, it's always a delight to inhale the scent of sea salt and catch the first glimpse of the ocean as one walks across the entrance way.

Fishing piers also come in different sizes and shapes. Some are long straight and narrow, some are built in the shape of a 'T' to provide additional space on the farthest end. Some have restaurants and/or bait shops at the entrance to them, others have elaborate huge gazebo structures with painted murals. Some piers are so rickety and crooked that one senses they may be washed away at any moment and wonders how they are still open to the public.
I am also fascinated with things that are seen on top of and below the fishing piers such as birds perched on top of the pier railings and lights, picnic tables and fish washing areas. I particularly love to walk underneath piers because the pillars themselves and the way the ocean crashes against them are so interesting plus it's always the coolest place to be on a hot summer day.

Thank you so much for sharing this truly beautiful hub.
A joy from beginning to end and here's to so many more to share.
I have to vote up accross the board except for funny, and also to bookmark.
Take care and have a wonderful day,
Eddy.
Good Morning Gail,
Wonderful walk on the beach. Thank you..You are very talented with the camera and capture such great moments. God bless,
Sunnie
Love the beach and love your pix! The light is just wonderful and the colors so true!
Absolutely beautiful, no words can describe.
I voted up and beautiful, what a stunning gallery, I particularly liked the flowers and picket fences, they seem so serenely inviting.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful photos.
I not surprised that these are breathtaking. I expect no less when I see a Hub from you. I enjoyed this immensely.
What a joy, Happyboomernurse! This is right up my alley of course. Beautiful work, lovely and fun photos, and I so want to be there. :) What fun beach entrances! I hope to maybe have one of those one day. The dunes and wooden structures great too. Loved it all. Rated up and all around, except funny.
What wonderful photos you shared here...very interesting composition. I was driving back from Greenville yesterday noticing all of the churches and thinking that would make a good photo hub.
I once had a dream of a house with a white picket fence in Jamaica. It came back to me when I saw the photos of your picket fences.
I really enjoyed the layout of your work here, Gail. Pat on the back there for you.
I feel like being there. Actually, I have been at the beach only on few occasions. Your photographs are very beautiful.
Happyboomernurse, yes it has been great, a true joy for sure to see all of people's amazing entries. You have many amazing entries, I was just thinking the same of you! I hope that we all don't stop here. I think it has helped many of us to look deeper for photos and creativity that we have all around us.
Oh, I miss my ocean sooooo much. Good luck - you have some wonderful photos in the contest!
This work is truly beautiful. You know I love the sea too:
I recall the roar of the surf as it explodes over ancient, volcanic rock formations that decorate the majestic Oregon coastline. Whitecap waves roll in endlessly and disperse impressively over the sandal-colored beach front.
Thank you again for visiting my hubs about emotional recovery. Sending you blue and white Light today....Gary.
Hi HBN, so nice to take another tour with you. I live near the beach here in S. Fl. and I can relate to these photos, especially the fishing piers. Thanks for another beautiful tour. As usual I vote this one UP, etc.etc.
Beach pictures and their associated structures make for beautiful pictures and your lovely hub.
So, this is what they refer to when they say, "Outside". lol
Gail, it is always a pleasure to show up at your hubs. It's like I a, taking a long weekend getaway. I thank you for that.
Just lovely HBN, I particularly love the wooden structures and plant life associated with the beach. My favorites are the awesome timber pier that dips and rises with the shifting sands, the weathered wooden fence with its zebra shadows(???)and the beautiful orange trumpets flowers against the weather timber. A lovely feast for my eyes, thank you - my votes to you, HBN.
Up and all across but funny HBN. Such beautiful pictures and a great informative article. These wood structures do add so much beauty to the beach. I would think that many people don't recognize them as much as they should, especially locals. This shows that importance. I love the Boardwalk picture with the clock. That is a great shot. Easily one of the best photographers I have seen. I hope you have a great day, best wishes, and Happy Thanksgiving to you and the family HBN. Hope all is well.
I agree. It seems like those times was more simple or easy going per say. It is a great picture that could be framed. I really like it.
I don't think I would want to venture too far on that pier!
I love your beach photo hubs gail, just beautiful.
thank you for sharing and voting up, MM
Oh dear, I am sorry HBN, the question marks were actually three ticks becuase the shadows image is my favourite - no question! Hub pages converted the ticks into ???. Sorry. But now that I have come back - my votes again :)
Isn't life beautiful, when we stop long enough to look?
Excellent Hub Gail!
Hi Gail,
I am glad to follow Bill's comment. I think you have an amazing and wonder-filled manner of presenting our beautiful life. Each unique picture tells a story, what a serene and peaceful setting.
This looks like the perfect place to run away from your cares. As such, I will be bookmarking for visits here and there.
Voted UP & UABI, mar.
What a wonderful walk along the beach, I so wanted to dabble my toes in the water. Beautiful photos, you are such a good photographer.
I loved the flowers on the picket fense but my favourite was the one with the mural.
Voting up B,A & I
HBN, how wonderful! Again, I am so amazed at the beautiful place that you live. As we sit with the ground half-covered in Canada, it does the soul good to look at the beach! I love the closeups you took of the fences. Very beautiful. Well done!
What gorgeous photos of the subject matter found at and around the beaches in your area. I liked all of these beautiful photos but my very favorite was the fence with the shadows in the sand. Gorgeous! All the up votes except funny. Thanks Gail for this tour.
What a wonderful idea for a hub! This might inspire me to do something in the future. Especially as I begin my 30 in 30 tomorrow. That first picture looked just like a painting of the beach. And the wooden texture on the 2nd set was great!
And the other ones beckon me to visit the beach once again. I sure wish I lived closer. It's about 7 hours to the beach from where I live.
Wonder walking on the beach with you!
You really are talented with your camera. This was a perfect "lift" as I sit in Michigan with winter fast approaching us. I am always delighted to see the beauty that you bring to hubpages. As always, I was not disappointed.
I have been to most of these beaches also, I love the beaches, I think that Bethany and Tybee are my favorite. I worked on Rehobeth Beach during a season and got to watch the dolphins and whales off shore. Love the pictures!!
Hi HBN,
I love your "tour" hubs with all the beautiful photography. They truly calm me. Really wonderful presentation!
Sharyn
Loved all the photos. You have an eye for composition and detail. Have you ever thought of putting them together in a book?
Great Shots! Great Shots!
I can't say anything else. You do have a great eye!
Couldn´t resist reading a hub with ´beach´in it. That clock!!!!!!!! Amazing looking.
My husband and I used to run a timber yardmany years ago, and I still love wood of every sort.
This was a beautiful hub.
Thank you.

Gail, this was like walking the beach with you! You should do a tutorial hub on how you set up your picture show. Someone may have already done it, but you make it looks so easy. Aweswome!
