Hub Pages: My Home Away From Home Part 3
71This is the end of the series and will feature hubs that bring the gift of laughter along with their excellent prose. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have. There are many great writers in this community and I admire all of you, but I secretly envy those who can evoke laughter, perhaps because that's not an emotion I'm skilled with eliciting in my own writings which is strange because when talking among friends I can be funny, but writing funny just doesn't come naturally to me. It's so foreign in fact, that when I used to take writing workshops and read my pieces aloud I was always surprised at people's responses. They would be silent in places I was trying to elicit laughter and chuckling in spots where I had not intended to be funny. Which I guess shows just how subjective "funny" is. The lesson I came away with was I'd best stay away from comedy. Better to aim for the heart and if it misses the mark and someone laughs they"ll think you tried to make them laugh- than trying to be funny because if you label a piece as funny and miss the mark then it's a tragedy, at least for me, the poor writer.
I've only written 1 hub intended to make people laugh and it has consistently carried the lowest hub scores and garnered the least amount of views. Surprisingly, the few who did read it left comments indicating they enjoyed it so on the outside chance it might make you laugh too, here's the title and link: "Happiness is Contagious: Pass it on if you Dare." http://happyboomernurse.hubpages.com/hub/Happiness-is-Contagious-Sooner-or-Later-it-Infects-Everyone-Around-us . (Hint: If the sound of babies laughing makes you happy don't miss this one).
Now, let's move on to other hubbers who do know how to make their readers laugh.
Hubs That Bring the Gift of Pure Laughter
Movie Master
"Cows: Our Noisy Nosy and Photogenic Country Neighbors" http://moviemaster.hubpages.com/hub/Cows-Our-Noisy-Nosy-and-Photogenic-Country-Neighbours . Movie Master had me laughing out loud as I learned things I never knew about cows, like just how sociable and curious they are especially if you're foolish enough to take their photograph! They must have seen visions of becoming stars on the big screen when Movie Master took an interest in them cause they keep returning for an encore. Even if you don't laugh while reading this hub, the pictures of the cows are priceless and prove this was a true story.
RNMSN
"Well, Maybe Not As Inept With An Ax As I Thought" http://rnmsn.hubpages.com/hub/Well-Maybe-Not-As-Inept-With-An-Ax-As-I-Thought by RNMSN is a delightful though somewhat scary and ultimately gory account of her encounter with a snake. Think momma bear protecting her baby cub and you'll have a good idea why RNMSN was so determined to get that snake with the ax! No way she was going to let it bite her Baby Girl!
Hyphenbird
"Once Upon a Childhood: Pirate's Gold". This is part of a series that Hyphenbird is writing about growing up in the Kentucky mountains with her siblings. Hyphenbird's compiling the Once Upon a Childhood series into a book which I expect will become a best seller. The most wonderful thing about her writing is that it can take your own emotions from serious to hilarious or hilarious to serious in the space of an eye blink. In this episode, a fun day along the railroad tracks nearly ends in tragedy for Hyphenbird and her siblings but she still manages to work some really good laughs into the hub before she gets your heart pounding in fear for her safety.
Femmeflashpoint
Femmeflashpoint is another hubber who can masterfully blend comedy into an otherwise serious piece. In "I Have a Bad Feeling About This" http://femmeflashpoint.hubpages.com/hub/I-have-a-bad-feeling-about-this she recalls a snow mobile trip that takes a potentially deadly turn. Even at the height of this serious situation she manages to break the tension several times with some very funny lines, including the punch line. If you, or someone in your group, have ever gone ahead and done something that was against your better instincts you'll appreciate this hub and be glad Femmflashpoint survived to tell it to us.
Akirchner
Akirchner's "Standup Comedy: Rollerblading With Malamutes (& Podbean Podcast)" http://akirchner.hubpages.com/hub/Standup-Comedy-Rollerblading-With-Malamutes can be read or listened to as she included a podcast at the end of the hub. Why she thought learning the new skill of roller-blading would be a good thing to do with her dogs is a mystery to me, but it sure makes a funny story, especially in Audrey's capable hands. I thought I was brave to learn how to roller-blade when I was 50, but Audrey took courage to the point of madness when she decided to learn how to roller-blade with her malamutes.
Hubbers Who Have the Gift of Satire
The dictionary defines satire as the use of derisive wit to attack folly or wickedness and the hubs in this section meet that definition, although one is more spoof than satire.
Prairieprincess
"How to NOT Get Along With People" . http://prairieprincess.hubpages.com/hub/How-to-Not-Get-Along-With-People . In the beginning of this hub Prairieprincess promises to give us a satiric explanation of how to get along with people and she succeeds. Showing us how NOT to get along makes it fun and palatable when we recognize the folly of the unflattering and sometimes ridiculous behavior we're guilty of using in our relationships with significant others and friends. And if you're human, you've probably done one or all of the things she lists at some point in your lifetime. If it was in the distant past you can laugh about it and if it's in the present it just may make you think twice the next time you're ready to act in a manner that's likely to cause drama and discord in your relationship.
Writeronline
"Fun Story Made From Baby Boomer Song Lyrics. And a Test" http://writeronline.hubpages.com/hub/NEW-Song-Fiction-And-A-Fun-Quiz-For-Baby-Boomer-Music-Fans . As the title suggests, this clever and witty story (more spoof than satire) is made up entirely from titles, lyrics and lyrical snippets from some of the great songs that were popular while Baby Boomers were growing up. Surprisingly, the love story he manages to create is cohesive and funny enough to stand on its own merits even if you're not familiar with all of the songs, but it's an absolute hoot to anyone who does know the tunes. Bonuses at the end of the hub include a fun quiz and a lot of music videos.
This Song's For You, Writeronline
Important Last Words to my Fellow Hubbers
This concludes my anniversary series in which I'm paying tribute to some of my fellow hubbers. As I said at the start, there are many hubbers whose work I admire and enjoy but who, for reasons of space, do not appear in this short series. If that applies to you I hope you know from all the comments that I leave whenever I enjoy a hub you've written, that I appreciate and love the hard work you put into all your hubs. If you are one of my followers, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting my own writing and I hope that I can continue entertaining and sometimes teaching you through the sharing of my hubs. If I am one of your followers I plan to continue reading your hubs and leaving comments when I've been touched, taught something valuable or been supremely entertained. And if neither scenario is true for you I hope you will leave a comment so I can check-out your profile and sample a hub or two. One of the greatest joys of hubbing is the thrill of finding a new hubber who's a great writer.

Hi HBN, how amazed am I to be included in your list!?
Honoured in fact.
And a song dedication as well!! Loved hearing that again. If you change just one word in the lyric, it sums up your fabulous Hub Love series; "All in the wonderful game, that we know as (Hub) love."
This series is a brilliant concept, and I'm looking forward to taking a look at the many hubbers you've named with whom I'm not yet familar.
Thanks again for the recognition HBN. It means a lot to me.
Cheers
I like the job you re doing here. Really really awesome. Best of wishes
I am almost speechless at being included-a first for me! So I will simply say "thank you" for your kindness.
A great series HBN. Being respectful defines what the community here is and this is yet another perfect example of that. Wonderful job. This is very inspirational and congrats to all the winners! Up and awesome.
Hi Happyboomernurse! What a great person you are for spreading all this hub love. It's nice to finally meet you properly here on HubPages. I have seen you around but only just realized that I wasn't following you until now. I am looking forward to reading many more of your hubs.
What a great tribute indeed and isnt HP wonderful! Thank you so much for including me Gail it means so much to me! Now I am off to read some of the hubs I have missed!
Thank you so very much for your series here Gail. The ones I'm familiar with Hyphenbird, femmeflashpoint and Sunnie day are amongst the best writers and folk on the HP, as no doubt the others are as well. Up!n Beaut!!
Happyboomernurse you have written a wonderful series. Many of the people I follow are mentioned (meaning, we agree on their talents). Thanks for highlighting some Hubbers I follow and introducing me to some new ones.
Nice Hub and great picks, Gail!
Gail - I'm so thrilled that you included one of my funniest malamute stories ever (and my dabbling at doing a podcast).
I also love that you can laugh at yourself - that something you write you thought was so funny gets no laugh but something else does. Isn't that the way of life?
The best part of writing anything comedic is if you get a belly laugh from your reader and I treasure each and every hubber who has read my crazy stories (all true by the way) and laughed. You have all done me the greatest service and the kindest deed~!
Congrats on your anniversary - and wishing you many more.
Audrey
You have done a wonderful series here. Most you have included I am familiar with so thank you for introducing those that I didn't know.
Voted up for a fantastic job
Boomer,
I got stuck on those shiny things again at the top of the page. I find I'm fascinated with them to a fault. However, each time I've managed to wrench my gaze away and force myself to scroll lower to reach the actual article, I found treasure equally as shiny and I wasn't disappointed.
However, in reading this one, I thought I'd discovered an incredibly largesse typo! When I realized it might not be a typo, goodness girlfriend, I was very humbled!
You've highlighted some of my favorite wordsmiths during these three articles, and pointed many of us in the right direction to find even more. Since the first Hub in the series came out, I've been able to start reading the material of some of those you've brought to our attention, and you were right. They are spectacular.
Like all good nurses, you've been thorough in presenting your information about them, which was wonderful for us because it gave us a glimpse of what sort of content to expect. Beyond what you've done here, so many of us have grown to appreciate your comments because you're always so encouraging with them. Encouragement means much when one is doing this sort of thing. Without it we wilt and wither much like the Texas landscape during the drought this past year.
It took time and effort to put these articles together, and you've earned a standing ovation from my little desk in Fort Worth. It's my feeling that you didn't write it for yourself, but as a gift to the Hub writers and readers. You wrapped it with charm and laid it out graciously for the rest of us to enjoy.
My thanks and sincere appreciation for the work you put into this.
I considered asking permission to download the series artwork to use as a background on my laptop. However, I've decided it's a bad idea. With those little green glass thingies floating on my screen, I'd never get any work done.
The first one on your list by MovieMaster regarding the cows is a hoot! I can see that I have some more reading to do. Thanks for sharing these with us. We can all use more smiles and laughter in our lives! Voted up and useful.
Thought I'd let you know, I've just had my first read of MovieMaster's work. It's a poem, and oh my ... what talent!
I am loving every word in this series and I am also coming accross new hubbers for me as well.
It is because of hubbers like you Gail that HP is the loving and caring community that it has become.
This one again has to be an up up and away.
Take care and have a great day.
Eiddwen.
Once again, you've outdone yourself by generously sharing and highlighting the work of others. Your choice of funny hubs is great! I had to go back and reread some because I enjoyed them so much the first time around. Some are new to me -- I'll be checking them out! This was a wonderful and thoughtful series and a great way to mark your first anniversary with HubPages!
Thanks for all the links to hubbers worthwhile to read. I agree wholeheartedly with you: "One of the greatest joys of hubbing is the thrill of finding a new hubber who's a great writer."
I am so glad I've found you.
What a wonderful way to spread the hub love around. And to do it with laughter is a wonderful way to end your hub love. I loved this hub. Laughter is the best medicine!
if you haven't seen the sexy bikini nun. You will have to watch it. I will share it in a second and you can watch it. It is hilarious!
It is my pleasure to support you if that means I get to read your great hubs.
Beautiful job-have bookmarked this one to catch those hubs you've recommended. Two thumbs and a vote up and across. Well done.
Gailboomer. What an end to my Saturday night with an oldie playing as I read the wonderful hubs that you honored and I read some dang fine writing. But, I'll end here and finish reading tomorrow. Thanks for the entertainment and laughter and love. Annie
Gail, I Loved reading this 3 part Series Hub. Some Hubs, you've suggested, and honored, I've read... while others I will certainly check out, so Thank You. Thank you also for the Video of Tommy Edwards, as you know I based a Hub around that song, "It's All In the Game". We certainly have Fun on Hub Pages, and meet such Wonderful Hubbers and Learn so much from one another. I truly feel blessed to call you my Friend, and so glad we Follow one another.
this is great! now we have some hubs to visit! vote up!
Hi Gail,
Now I am super behind but bookmarking the conclusion of this fabulous anniversary tribute. I have greatly enjoyed reading all three articles once, learning even things about those inspirational men and women whom I already follow. I will treasure this for a long time to come, learning about new friends and spreading the word to my students... as we have with our friend, Melovy, via Movie Master. Our HubPages community is so generous and giving, largely in part to lovely people like you, Gail.
This installment is UP and across the board UFABI, mar.
HBNurse, I am behind on your hubs and missed that you had mentioned me in this hub! Thank you so much! I was not expecting this at all, and what an honour that you chose me for a humour hub! I never know if my humour attempts translate well. I am bookmarking this to have a look at all of the hubs you mentioned. You've given me some more reading to do and that's awesome!
Once again, a fabulous hub that shows your generosity with your fellow hubbers. I appreciate your comments and support so much and am glad to have "met" you through HP. Here's to an excellent Year #2!
Well I chuckled when you wrote about your writing not being funny! I feel the same way. I'm so glad that I was able to read this wonderful series. It has given me great pleasure in learning of other hubs and hubbers. Thank you again.
You are so considerate HBN. Our friendship has always been a great one:):) Your thoughfulness is undefined and undeniable. So in recognition to your awards, you deserve one too. Enjoy this plaque in your honor:) To friendship and your kind heart of gold.
