Lawn Ornaments for Lighthouse Lovers
I have been in love with lighthouses for as long as I can remember and I know millions share my love of these beautiful, functional and romantic structures. To see a lighthouse, even a replica of one, is to be reminded of the sea on moonlit nights as well as dark and stormy nights, and to know that many a sailor's life has been saved by the light of these magnificent buildings. But lighthouse lovers' fascination doesn't end there. To see a lighthouse is to think of the Lighthouse Keeper and the Keeper's family rescuing capsized sailors, fishing their bodies out of the water just as the waves washed them to shore. The Keeper would bring the wounded into the house, provide first aid, feed and clothe the sailors until they were strong enough to leave.
This article is a photo gallery of replica lighthouses that are either lawn ornaments, part of a streetscape beautification project or real houses that are designed to look like a lighthouse. The photos were all taken in Southern Delaware which is the author's home state. And the author hopes you will simply enjoy viewing the gallery of photos or perhaps even be inspired to decorate your own lawn with a replica lighthouse. The hand-painted lighthouses in these photos are available at L.H. Webb & Sons Market Inc. in Frederica, DE but anyone wishing to add Lighthouse Decorations to their lawn can go online and find numerous companies that ship them wherever you are. There are a large number of beautiful and functional lighthouse lawn ornaments that you can choose from. Whether you want to add extra lighting to your lawn or garden or just want to add a nautical flare to your yard you can easily find what you're looking for.
Some people like to use replicas of famous lighthouses, especially ones they may have previously visited. Most famous lighthouses have fascinating stories connected with them and you can regale visitors with tales about the real lighthouse that your own is modeled after. Many of today's lighthouse replicas are available in sizes ranging from three feet to as high as twelve feet tall and some, but not all come with working lights that may require a source of electricity or may run on solar power so if you're ordering one be sure to find out if those features are included.
Another thing you need to consider is the type of material you want your replica to be made of. You can choose from a variety of materials including wood, stucco, and stone and you can also choose whether you want your lighthouse to be solid or hollow. My own lighthouse ornament is hollow because I wanted it to cover an ugly, 2 foot high well marker that was in my front yard. Some people prefer solid ones because they are heavier and sturdier. Whatever type of lighthouse lawn ornaments you prefer, you can find a wide selection of them online by simply typing the words, "lighthouse lawn ornaments" into Google.

The Mispillion Lighthouse Burns Down & A Couple Builds a Replica Using Some Original Parts
On the morning of May 2, 2002, a lightning bolt struck the top of the Mispillion Lighthouse in Slaughter Beach, DE, destroying the upper portion of the tower and charring much of the wooden structure's interior. Prior to the fire, the owner had been trying to work with a non-profit agency to restore the lighthouse to its prior glory but those plans went up in smoke that fateful day.
However, a synchronous event occurred when on that very same day John and Sally Freeman purchased a building lot in Shipcarpenter's Square, a Lewes, DE, neighborhood that consists of relocated historic structures. When Sally saw a picture of the damaged Mispillion Light she and her husband contacted the owner and negotiated a deal that would allow them to purchase the remains of the Mispillion Lighthouse. By July 2005 the Freeman's had built a reconstructed and expanded Mispillion River Lighthouse in Shipcarpenter Square, complete with a brand new modern lantern costing over $53,000! At least a portion of the original lighthouse was incorporated into the new structure and lighthouse enthusiasts such as myself can still enjoy the beauty of this unique lighthouse and the memory of Delaware's last standing wooden-framed lighthouse continues to be honored.

Hi Gail,
I do love lighthouses and have a large one with a solar light..I use to collect smaller ones but found I did not have the room to keep them..I loved all your pictures and information. There is something about lighthouses that bring comfort when you look on one..maybe because the light is used to show one the way home..Thank you my friend,
Sunnie
Good Morning, HBN: Don't you ever rest?? This is another outstanding Hub: interesting and beautiful photos, too. We have an old Lighthouse in our area at what they call The House of Refuse. I've forgotten how long this structure is but if you're interested, look it up on the net. It is located in Stuart, FL
I wrote a silly little poem yesterday for my fellow Hubbers who can't get away from their computers. You are mentioned in it: not by name, but you will recognize yourself!
I will also vote this one Up, etc.etc.
Hope you have a wonderful day...
I love the house lighthouse! Great up. Voted up.
Wonderful hub and I have a lot of work to do to catch up with you as I too adore lighthouses.
Good Morning HBN & Greetings From So Cal -
Very nicely done. Love the subject matter and practical applications -
The image of a lighthouse has traditionally invoked many different visions, feelings, and emotions ranging from the classical nautical icon, to a mysterious lonely one person job in which a man or woman spends countless hours in solitude isolated atop within the pinnacle and accompanied by a mere lantern - Gazing out upon the open waters to ensure safe vessel passage as the tide ebbs & flows -
A deep sense of "Romanticism" is also a common theme built around the architecturally unique structure, and that's where my sentiment can be found - Thanks for reminding me how intriguing this image can truly be -
Great Piece -

I'm a huge fan of lighthouses and always think I'd love to go stay in one as a B&B. I do worry though a bit about it since we've gone twice now to the Oregon Coast and had horrific winds and quite "unusual" storm watches. I'm always worried about the time I decide to finally do this, we'll have a tsunami.
Voted up and awesome, etc. just because it is totally well presented as usual with gorgeous pictures and full of information. I don't have an ornament on my lawn as it might be a little weird being so far inland but definitely if I lived on the coast....until the tsunami washed it away~~ ha ha
HBN, you are quite the photographer:) Votes up and across but funny. I liked how you were able to catch all the different uses a lighthouse can purpose. A very interesting chain of events with the Mispillion Lighthouse. I believe it is very important to keep these historic structures around for our children and grandchildren and so on. We learn from the past and we corperate it to the future. I just can't get over these stunning pictures HBN. Your such a great writer and the effort is seen in this hub and your other articles. My aunt loves lighthouses. Her entire house is decorated in them. I guess it is her fetish. If she sees a lighthouse in anything, she gets it. I do say though, her interior looks really good with them. Awesome job. Hope all is well. Getting ready for work, but I will catch you soon. Take care and enjoy your evening:) Best regards.
Great HUB! I enjoy lighthouses also. Good job bringing them to us. Voted up and beautiful.
Gail same thing happened to me...I once did tea kettles..but ended up with way too much clutter..now I dont collect anything but dust..hahaha
Again lovely hub..
Hugs,
Sunnie
lololo...I do the same with mirrors...what I dont see without my glasses then I do not worry about..hahah
Beautiful! Lighthouses really area lovely design. I know many people collect them. I really like the text and the photos you chose. Just lovely.
I loved the idea of Lighthouse Ornaments Displayed in Local Yards. Great photos and interesting information.
OK, that quiz was easy because I LOVE lighthouses as well, Gail.
The coolest I have admired are in NJ but I appreciate your virtual tour. John and Sally had it going on with the rennovation of that beautiful treasure.
Oh and wee hours... it's a nurse thing I think (LOL)!
Voted UP & UABI... Can I give you a Hub bouquet as you are very generous with that lovely tradition? Oops, I just did, mar!
Hello Happyboomernurse what an array of lighthouses you have represented her. It is like taking a stroll on the Eastern seaboard. Not many lighthouses out our way. I guess we just let the ships crash. I see from the comment stream that your hub has brought a lot of pleasure to your readers.
What is it about a Light House that makes us fall in love with it...The Mystery, the Romance, their Beauty... Well these Wonderful Pictures of Lighthouses are a Treasure to look at, Gail. I had a lighthouse mixed in with my Garden and Enjoyed it for quite a few Season, it was a small one, and eventually kind of fell apart. Yes, I will replace it next Spring.
This is really cool. I have always wanted to live in a lighthouse. Call me odd, but they look like so much fun and are simply wonderful architectural structures. Love this!
Your photos are lovely.
There is something about lighthouses that is romantic. Havibg said that the first one built on the east coast here was maintained by prison guards... not so romantic.
It was so nice to see that some of Mispillion Lighthouse parts were reused. I have seen a few in the UK that have been refurbished and made into homes.
A very interesting hub thank you
Oh wow Gail!! This one was amazing,so very well presentd with those beautiful photos.
A great big up up and away here without a doubt.
Take care my friend and enjoy your weekend.
Eddy.
Good hub, I didn't know you could get a small sized lighthouse for your yard. Good job!
Love your collection of pictures--lighthouses are special. Love your ornamental lighthouse--how clever. Great hub and rating it up.
I love lighthouses - they are fascinating and so interesting when you compare the different styles and types around the country. I think it would be interesting to live in one, don't you? Voted up and interesting
I have always loved light houses and your information and pictures are fantastic. This is a lovely hub. Rated up many times.
Hi Gail,
Your lighthouse lawn ornament is an attractive way to cover an otherwise unattractive pipe in your yard. Clever! Like others who have voted, I love seeing lighthouses and have even created a linocut of one. Will have to feature it in a future hub. Votes up! :))
Those are pretty cool! Ever since watching Pete's Dragon as a kid, I've wanted to live in a lighthouse!
Hi HBN,
I love lighthouses. My best friend has a large replica as her lamp post on her property. It's a conversation piece.
Very well written hub and awesome pics!
Sharyn
