Gazebos Adorn Silver Lake Like a Strand of Pearls

Silver Lake, Steps From Rehoboth Boardwalk

This hub will feature the exclusive Silver Lake area of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, and will include a photo gallery of its mansions, gazebos, outdoor seating areas and wildlife. Most visitors come to Rehoboth Beach to enjoy its mile long boardwalk, fine restaurants, bandstand entertainment, art galleries and the unique boutiques that line beautiful Rehoboth Avenue. Thousands of tourists enjoy the town's sandy beaches and numerous festivals throughout the year, but not many realize that if they walk to the south end of the boardwalk and turn right onto Queen St. they can stroll, jog, or bike ride around a glittering fresh water lake. Private gazebos adorn Silver Lake's shoreline like a strand of pearls. Here, amidst lavishly landscaped lawns and gardens one feels miles away from the hustle and bustle of activity on the boardwalk and yet this stunning walk is just a few blocks inland. This hub is a pictorial tour of Silver Lake during a sunny fall day and all the photos were taken by Gail Sobotkin, the hub's author. The area is full of prime real estate and has an exclusive feel to it but the community is not gated and as long as visitors stay on the public sidewalks or street they can enjoy the stunningly lovely views, abundant wild life and quiet beauty of the lake.

Facts About Silver Lake and its Abundant Wildlife

Silver Lake is one of the closest fresh water lakes to the Atlantic Ocean along the east coast and is designated as a waterfowl preserve making it a popular attraction for wildlife photographers who capture stunning images of the lake and its flocks of ducks, Canada geese and other aquatic birds, fish, several species of water turtles and one blue heron. The lake is picturesque and is located directly behind the Atlantic Ocean, between Rehoboth and Dewey Beach. It covers approximately 45 acres and the roads that surround it have luxury condos, townhouses, single family homes, mansions and a few remaining building lots. This pictorial covers the area on Lake Drive which is where most of the mansions and gazebos are situated. Zoning restrictions prevent land that is directly adjacent to this side of the lake from having a permanent standing structure, with the exception of docks and gazebos which is why most of the homes on Lake Drive have unobstructed views of the lake.

Hope you have enjoyed this pictorial stroll through picturesque Silver Lake during the fall season and will come for a real visit to the tourist friendly Rehoboth Beach resort where you can enjoy free concerts and ocean swimming in the summertime and fine dining, festivals and beach combing in spring and fall. Now that you know about the quiet beauty of South Rehoboth's Silver Lake, be sure to take a break from the excitement and many activities on Rehoboth Avenue and the boardwalk to walk, run or bike ride around the lake. Bring your camera and take your own photos of the lovely gazebos and abundant wildlife and don't forget to smile at everyone you meet along the way spreading shineshine wherever you go.

I was wondering when we'd see a new Hub from you. I just knew you wouldn't let the contest go by without you entering. I'm glad you entered this one, because it quite beautiful. I'd hate to be a judge in this contest! Good luck to you, my friend, Mary

I've always thought that gazebos were beautiful structures, but the only time I've seen any that look as elaborate as these have been on screen or in pictures. The ones I've seen around here are basic. I love the photographs.

Hi FloraBreenRobison,

Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a lovely comment. Glad you liked the photos. I've always been in love with gazebos but the ones on Silver Lake are positioned right over the water with such stunning views and some of them are quite large. I live about a half hour north of Rehoboth Beach but go there often to take walks and bike ride and when the crowds are deep in summertime I head for the lake. The whole town is quiet on fall weekdays but I still go to the lake because the changing foliage is beautiful.

Silver Lake looks like a lovely, peaceful place to enjoy a walk on a fall day. I love the pretty white gazebos that are built out over the water, and I can just imagine sitting out there with a book or sketch pad and a cup of coffee. You've captured the elegance and grace of the gazebos and the community so well in your photographs! Good luck with the contest! This hub is a great kick-off!

Hi Will,

It's great to see you here. I'll be over in a little while to read your short story. I see from the feed that it's been getting some rave reviews.

I laughed at your comment because whenever I walk through the Silver Lake area I FEEL wealthy, as though I'm walking inside a movie. Such perfection just doesn't seem real, but it is and I thank God that I'm living in America where even the "regular" folk who live in modest homes can walk through an area like this one. I have to say, though, that the residents are incredibly friendly and I appreciate their contribution to the local economy and tax base.

Thanks for the vote up. It's greatly appreciated.

Hi Sunnie,

Thanks so much for your lovely comment. I've never been out west so we're like the flip side of a coin. Maybe someday hubby and I will get there.

Hi Mckbirdbks,

So glad you enjoyed the mini-vacation. You are right about the sense of nostalgia and simpler times. I never really thought of it that way but it totally fits the feeling of the lakeside homes and gazebos which have a simple elegance about them. Makes one remember what life was like before all our technology when we used to sit together with friends and family on warm summer days and nights, entertaining each other with oral stories and sometimes music and song.

Thanks for stopping by. I really enjoyed our little cyber-visit. Sometimes our imaginations are more real than reality itself.

Hi Femmeflashpoint,

I'm always happy to see your smiling face in the comment section cause you leave such encouraging and empowering comments. I even read every comment you make to others because they're so cool!

What I know for sure is that I had so much FUN putting this pictorial and the one I just did about Lewes, DE together. I love this area so much and it's a great pleasure to be able to share some of its beauty and history with others, even if it's just through photos and words.

Yes, the wildlife is what makes Silver Lake truly special and I missed a few potentially great shots because I wasn't fast enough with my camera. A great blue heron was near the great egret but flew off before I captured his image. There were also 50 Canadian geese being fed by one of the residents and when I walked by them they took off about 10 feet over my head. What a thrill to see their underbellies so close up! What a shot that would have been, but I was still fumbling to get my camera focussed and missed it.

Thanks again for all your support and encouragement to me and many others on HP. It really means a lot.

Happyboomernurse, thank you for sharing this amazing hub about a wonderfully beautiful place. I definitely want to visit Silver lake one day in Rehoboth Beach. I have never been to Delaware, but so hope to go in the future.

You sure picked a great day or days to get photos of this area, they seem perfect and so lovely. It was a joy to view them, and take a tour. There is so much offered there as well. I am glad to learn of other areas like this, its going on a dream list of places I hope to visit one day. :) Loved the wildlife too. Excellent hub!

femmeflashpoint Level 7 Commenter 6 months ago

Thank you Boomer. I promise, I get far more from the writers on the Hub than I could ever manage to give.

I learn something new every time I read here, and beyond the mastery at the word smithing, I've met so many people I've come to admire on a personal level, which has been the true nugget of gold in being here.

I'm thrilled that you had fun with your camera! You're becoming quite the accomplished shutter bug!

It's true that I love words, but words with photos are the cherry on the cake, and you put them together for this piece beautifully.

I really have to take a little time and figure out how some of you are including those tiny photos that enlarge in the frame below them. I've just started noticing them, and I think it's a very cool set up because it allows for you to include many more shots.

As my great-grand used to say, "There's just no such a thing" ... as too many pictures. ;)

Hi Oceansnsunsets,

Hope you do get to visit the Southern Delaware area someday. As a fellow nature/ocean lover you're almost guaranteed to love it.

I took the gazebo and mansion pictures on one day but returned to get some pictures of the wildlife. Was trying to get the great heron who lives there but that'll have to wait for another time. One of the things I love about hubs is that we have the ability to add to them even after they've been published.

Thanks so much for your feedback and support. It's greatly appreciated.

Dear Gail,

My mind is going a mile a minute... I am having some AHAs...(hee-hee!):

1-This is truly exquisite and shows that you have a gift with photography! I wish you much good luck with the contest and vote this UP & ABI...

2-I guess I didn't register how "close" we really are to each other... Geoff and I love Tilghman Island, MD as our little getaway but have often commented that we wanted to check out Rehoboth Beach..... and now I have such an excellent review and reason!! I am so happy to bookmark this!

November is exciting in HubLand with everyone's special talents coming alive! "See" you soon, mar!

Happyboomernurse profile image

Happyboomernurse Hub Author 6 months ago

Hi Mar,

I totally agree that November is turning into an exciting month in HubLand. It's been only a few days and I'm already having so much fun reading and viewing hubs. And how cool is it that nurses like you and me are doing photography and poetry? Stretching our wings and becoming artistic instead of scientific! I'm sure that's healthy for our brains. (hehe).

Can't believe you've never checked out Rehoboth Beach. You're probably between 2 to 3 hours from all of Southern Delaware's beaches. Lewes is closest to you, then comes Rehoboth. In between both beaches there is wonderful tax free shopping in the Tanger Outlets!

I've been to Tilghman Island on day trips and it was truly lovely and quiet with stunning wildlife. Could see why you like it there so much.

I so appreciate the feedback and encouragement on my photos and the vote up. I'm also happy to learn you're bookmarking this for future reference.

Keep the poetry flowing. I'm really enjoying your series of mantras.

Hi Gail,

I just have to agree that the more I "stretch" and admire my "homey RN pals" like you, Sunnie, Pamela, Peggy, Denise..., I tell my students to think of themselves as creative in their Nursing roles. One of my students (a single Mom) started her own blog as a result. One picked up her paintbrush again. We all "do" something... at least when we allow ourselves to, OK... sorry, sweetie! See you around all the excitement, mar!

Happyboomernurse profile image

Happyboomernurse Hub Author 6 months ago

Hi Mar,

That's so cool and I think it's an important lesson. Creativity is a vital nursing skill especially in community health and creative hobbies bring balance and release from the stressful job of nursing.

Hugs,

Gail

What a beautiful place HBN. The pictures are quite amazing. I always wanted a home such as this. I like being comfortable in my surroundings. I believe beautiful places put the mind at peace and it helps with writing. I write best when I am calm and the beauty of such places like this, it brings out the creative side. Just like fall HBN, with all the beautiful leaves and perfect temperature days. This just seems like that kind of place. Absolutely stunning. Voted up and across but funny. A great article.

Hi lyricwriter,

It is that kind of place and when I read your comment I smiled because I often bring a notebook with me and write when I'm at the beach. I find the quiet, "hidden" places and draw inspiration from the beauty that surrounds me. My own home is a basic ranch style house but I love it because it's bright, has a nice yard and is affordable and easy to clean!

Thanks for your kind words. They're greatly appreciated. I hope you get your absolute dream house some day. Dreams are a wonderful thing, especially if we have peace, love and enjoyment in the present. Dreams keep us optimistic and tap into our passions.
