Cape May Lewes Ferry: More Than Just a Way to Cross the DE Bay

For years my family took the Cape May Lewes Ferry whenever we traveled from New York State to our Outer Banks, NC vacation destination. The 17 mile ferry ride cut 90 miles off the land route trip, but more than that it was the first shift into "vacation mode" for all of us, something we eagerly looked forward to. One whiff of the salty air blowing against our faces and hubby and I would smile and say, "Ah....vacation has started. We can relax now." Seagulls always followed the ferry hoping for scraps of food and dolphin leaped through the air as if they too, were glad we were riding on the ferry. When our son was little he loved being held in his Dad's arms and would gleefully point to the birds, dolphin and 3 lighthouses that we passed on our 80 minute boat ride (Cape May Light in NJ and Harbor of Refuge Light and Delaware Breakwater East End Light in DE). If we'd gotten off to a late start, we were sometimes treated to a magnificent sunset over the bay and my son would cuddle up with me on a bench with a blanket wrapped around his bare legs as we watched the orange and yellow sky gradually fade away. When he got older he loved wandering around the ship himself, playing the video games on-board and getting cafeteria style food from the snack bar.

But it was only when we moved to Delaware a decade ago that I began looking at the ferry as more than just a means of transportation and started taking advantage of the Lewes Terminal activities and the foot passenger service. Whether it's drizzling outside or a bright sunny day, a round-trip ferry ride is perfect for relaxing and getting away from life's strains and stresses for a few hours.

Fun Activities at the Lewes and Cape May Terminals

Though the ferry was constructed with transportation as its chief goal, the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) gradually began to recognize its potential as a tourist attraction and have done many things to draw tourists including substantially overhauling its two terminal facilities in 2000-2001. Cape May received a brand new terminal while the Lewes terminal was expanded and renovated. Both now feature unique "towers" which have elevators and staircases that connect the buildings to glass-enclosed walkways which have panoramic air-conditioned views of the bay. The walk-ways allow foot passengers to board vessels directly on the second deck avoiding vehicles that are driving onto the ferry.

Both terminals feature nautical themed gift shops and indoor food courts which are open year-round. They also have ticket and information booths and lots of brochures. In addition, history and art exhibits are sometimes on display.

From Memorial Day through July 3rd, the On the Rocks Bar and Grill located outside the Lewes terminal is open on weekends and through July 4 through August 31st its open daily. The grill has a reputation for serving the best burgers in the area and the view is stunning whether you sit outside under the umbrella protected tables or inside in the air conditioned cafeteria. Young children love playing in the nautical style playground and older children enjoy playing miniature golf on the terminal grounds.

Visitors at both terminals can park for free in well-lit and security patrolled lots.

In Delaware, shuttles loop from the terminal to downtown Lewes, Tanger Outlets, and the Park & Ride lot where you may connect with the DART bus system to go to Rehoboth Beach or Ocean City, MD. during the summer months.

In New Jersey, the shuttle continuously loops between downtown Cape May and the ferry terminal during the summer months. Weekend shuttle service is offered in May and early June. Starting mid June, the shuttle service operates seven days a week through the end of Sept. In October the shuttle runs on weekends only. It's important to note that although pets are allowed on the ferries, they are not allowed onto the shuttle buses.

Lighthouse Pete's Family Fun Cruise

This cruise is a great way to introduce kids to a ferry boat ride. The'll love being on board with Lighthouse Pete, an adorable mascot in pirate uniform who will help make the trip a fun-filled adventure for them. Kids will also learn tips on how to be safe sailors including:

  • Hold handrails when on stairs
  • Never run
  • Be extra careful when decks are wet
  • Be careful when going through doorways.

Pirate Pete cruises also have entertainment and music. They sail from the Cape May, NJ terminal on Wednesdays from July 6th to August 31st on the 6:00 pm round-trip departure and from the Lewes, Delaware terminal on Thursdays from July 7th to September 1st on the 4:15 pm round-trip departure.

There is no additional charge for Pirate Pete cruises beyond the usual price of ferry passage.

Special Excursions for Foot Passengers

The ferry offers many popular programs and events. My personal favorites are:

  • The Historic Lewes Tour which is available Monday through Saturday between June 14 to Sept. 18 and includes a round-trip ferry ride departing from Cape May, NJ, shuttle service into Lewes, DE and admission into the Lewes Historical Society Complex, Cannonball House Maritime Museum and the Zwaanendael Museum. Cost is $25 per adult and $18 for kids between the ages of 6 to 13. A half hour trolley tour of Lewes can be added for an additional $3 per person.
  • The Cape May Guided Trolley Tour which is available daily from June 13th to September and includes a round-trip ferry ride from Lewes , DE and shuttle service into Cape May where you will enjoy a guided, 45-minute trolley tour of the town Historic District. Cost is $25 per adult and $18 for kids between the ages of 6 to 13.
  • Rock the Boat cruises which run every Friday night between July 8th to September 2nd and are free with the price of ferry passage. These cruises have great music onboard and depart from Cape May, NJ at 6:00 pm and from Lewes, DE at 6:15 pm.
  • The Marine Naturalist Program which is hosted by the Wetlands Institute and is a live animal program onboard the ferry. Kids can see and learn about marine critters such as diamondback terrapins, horseshoe crabs and northern sea stars. An Institute Naturalist will also talk about local birds, fish and marine life. These cruises are also free with the price of ferry passage. They sail on Thursdays, July 7 through August 25 and depart from Cape May, NJ at 9:30 am and 1:00 pm. They also depart from Lewes at 11:15 am and 2:45 pm.

Thanks for your uplifting comment. My uncle, who was dressed in his navy uniform took me and my siblings on our first ferry ride when he was home on leave. I was five years old and still remember the fantastic thrill of being on that boat, held up in my strong uncle's arms so I could get a better view. I think that was the very moment I fell in love with boats. Always loved a man in uniform, also.

I love ferries! We should go on the ferry in San Francisco more. When we lived in Seattle, we would take the ferry often to the San Juan Islands; it was so much fun. I think our girls would love the experience like your kids. If we're ever in Deleware, we will have to visit!

Welcome Robin,

I think most kids do love ferries and many adults feel like a kid again when they're on them especially if they're with a child.

Thanks for taking time to read my hub and leave a comment.

btw, I love your profile picture. Your little girl looks adorable!

What a fantastic and informative hub! We traveled back from South Carolina one March and used the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel. It would be really fun some year to combine that with all other ferry options. You are so correct about the ferry signifying the beginning of vacation. Thanks for this enjoyable and useful hub.

Hi Husky1970,

Thanks so much for the positive feedback and for taking time to leave a comment. We do take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel when traveling to the Outer Banks. That view is also stunning. So glad you enjoyed this hub.

I loved this hub! So much detailed info and the photos were beautiful.

I could picture your family on the ferry, you and your son cuddled on the bench and he old enough to finally be able to go off on his own a bit on the ferry. Made me think of my boys when they were younger.

Voted up and across except funny.

Thanks for the great feedback, Danette, I really appreciate all your support and am thrilled you loved this hub.

That young son is now 31! He still loves boats, though, especially if he can fish from them. And he was always a fantastic little traveler!

Thanks for the vote up.

Hi Vietnamvet,

Being nature lovers like me, I think you and Bobbi would love visiting the Delaware beaches, especially during late spring and early fall when most of the tourists are gone during the weekdays and the weather's still warm.

So glad you liked the hub and found it informative.

I always enjoy the hubs you do about upstate New York.

What a great sounding place and fun ferry rides. The only ferries that I have ridden are in the San Juan Islands and in San Francisco...but will put the Cape May Lewes Ferry on my list if ever in that area. Will vote for your hub in the fan faves and congratulations. Well deserved! Also up, useful and beautiful votes.

Happyboomernurse profile image

Hi Peggy,

Thanks so much for your kind words and vote. As you'll see when you go to vote the hub that's been nominated is another one I recently wrote, "Fun Summer Activities in Cape Henlopen State Park." The Cape Henlopen State Park is within a mile of the Cape May Lewes Ferry so I designed both hubs to be linked together.

Again, I really appreciate your support of all my writings.

This sounds like a great place to visit and ferry rides are always fun. We have a ferry not to far from where we live. We rode on a ferry around the 1000 islands in the St. Lawrence Seaway and that was really wonderful Very good, interesting hub.

When I read your hubs, I feel like I am seeing the world from your eyes and your perspective, especially so since you use your own photos, but it really is a vacation out of my own head for awhile. Thanks for that, happyboomernurse:)

Aw Kim, your comments are so kind and really make my day. The ferry is right next to Cape Henlopen State Park and by the time your baby grand-daughter turns 3 she'd love visiting these places.

Even while she's still a baby or toddler, Lewes DE is a great place to visit as it has a Town Beach along the bay which is a small, non-commercial beach that has gentle waves. And Cape Henlopen State Park has a bayside beach with mild waves (in addition to its ocean beaches).

So glad you're enjoying my travel hubs. I'm so blessed to live in this area and I love sharing info about it with others.

Wonderful, wonderful Hub Happyboomernurse. We had the treat of taking the New Ferry across to our Jersey side a few years back. It was Fun, except for when Lover Man sat backwards and got SeaSick! We always had a boat. But I told him not to sit that way, you know men...I drove us home. Next time I'd love to take our Bikes.

Happyboomernurse profile image

Happyboomernurse Hub Author 10 months ago

Hi b.Malin,

Your comment made me chuckle but then I felt guilty for laughing at poor Lover Man's seasickness! Sometimes the waves can get rough no matter how you sit, but usually it's fairly steady.

If you like bike riding, the Delaware side is great.

Thanks for all your support.

Oh A.A. Zavala, your comments always make smile, but you're right- they should be airing commercials to lure tourists to southern Delaware, especially in the months of May, June and Sept. Oct. when the weather is great and the summer crowds are absent.

I love ferries, and still enjoy taking one of the free ferries along the Outer Banks for a little "cruise" on a beautiful day. Nice and informative. I can share your views since I took Staten Island Ferry a number of times, because it was free. But my best travels were Alaska Ferry, Chilean Navimag Ferry and Melbourne-Hobart ferry.

But I was moved by your description and would certainly take Cape May Lewes Ferry next time I go to New York.

Welcome Hafeezrm,

So glad you enjoyed my hub. I think the Staten Island Ferry was the first one I was ever on though I was too small to know for sure. When I was 4 or 5, my Uncle was on leave from the Navy and took my older sister and myself on a ferry ride to NYC. It was a thrilling when he picked me up so that I could see the wake that the ferry was making.

Thanks for leaving such an interesting comment. It sounds like you've had many wonderful travel adventures.
