Cape May Lewes Ferry: More Than Just a Way to Cross the DE Bay
For years my family took the Cape May Lewes Ferry whenever we traveled from New York State to our Outer Banks, NC vacation destination. The 17 mile ferry ride cut 90 miles off the land route trip, but more than that it was the first shift into "vacation mode" for all of us, something we eagerly looked forward to. One whiff of the salty air blowing against our faces and hubby and I would smile and say, "Ah....vacation has started. We can relax now." Seagulls always followed the ferry hoping for scraps of food and dolphin leaped through the air as if they too, were glad we were riding on the ferry. When our son was little he loved being held in his Dad's arms and would gleefully point to the birds, dolphin and 3 lighthouses that we passed on our 80 minute boat ride (Cape May Light in NJ and Harbor of Refuge Light and Delaware Breakwater East End Light in DE). If we'd gotten off to a late start, we were sometimes treated to a magnificent sunset over the bay and my son would cuddle up with me on a bench with a blanket wrapped around his bare legs as we watched the orange and yellow sky gradually fade away. When he got older he loved wandering around the ship himself, playing the video games on-board and getting cafeteria style food from the snack bar.
But it was only when we moved to Delaware a decade ago that I began looking at the ferry as more than just a means of transportation and started taking advantage of the Lewes Terminal activities and the foot passenger service. Whether it's drizzling outside or a bright sunny day, a round-trip ferry ride is perfect for relaxing and getting away from life's strains and stresses for a few hours.

Fun Activities at the Lewes and Cape May Terminals
Though the ferry was constructed with transportation as its chief goal, the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) gradually began to recognize its potential as a tourist attraction and have done many things to draw tourists including substantially overhauling its two terminal facilities in 2000-2001. Cape May received a brand new terminal while the Lewes terminal was expanded and renovated. Both now feature unique "towers" which have elevators and staircases that connect the buildings to glass-enclosed walkways which have panoramic air-conditioned views of the bay. The walk-ways allow foot passengers to board vessels directly on the second deck avoiding vehicles that are driving onto the ferry.
Both terminals feature nautical themed gift shops and indoor food courts which are open year-round. They also have ticket and information booths and lots of brochures. In addition, history and art exhibits are sometimes on display.
From Memorial Day through July 3rd, the On the Rocks Bar and Grill located outside the Lewes terminal is open on weekends and through July 4 through August 31st its open daily. The grill has a reputation for serving the best burgers in the area and the view is stunning whether you sit outside under the umbrella protected tables or inside in the air conditioned cafeteria. Young children love playing in the nautical style playground and older children enjoy playing miniature golf on the terminal grounds.
Visitors at both terminals can park for free in well-lit and security patrolled lots.
In Delaware, shuttles loop from the terminal to downtown Lewes, Tanger Outlets, and the Park & Ride lot where you may connect with the DART bus system to go to Rehoboth Beach or Ocean City, MD. during the summer months.
In New Jersey, the shuttle continuously loops between downtown Cape May and the ferry terminal during the summer months. Weekend shuttle service is offered in May and early June. Starting mid June, the shuttle service operates seven days a week through the end of Sept. In October the shuttle runs on weekends only. It's important to note that although pets are allowed on the ferries, they are not allowed onto the shuttle buses.
Kids Play While Waiting for Cruise

Lighthouse Pete's Family Fun Cruise
This cruise is a great way to introduce kids to a ferry boat ride. The'll love being on board with Lighthouse Pete, an adorable mascot in pirate uniform who will help make the trip a fun-filled adventure for them. Kids will also learn tips on how to be safe sailors including:
- Hold handrails when on stairs
- Never run
- Be extra careful when decks are wet
- Be careful when going through doorways.
Pirate Pete cruises also have entertainment and music. They sail from the Cape May, NJ terminal on Wednesdays from July 6th to August 31st on the 6:00 pm round-trip departure and from the Lewes, Delaware terminal on Thursdays from July 7th to September 1st on the 4:15 pm round-trip departure.
There is no additional charge for Pirate Pete cruises beyond the usual price of ferry passage.

Kids can see and learn about marine critters such as diamondback terrapins, horseshoe crabs and northern sea stars. An Institute Naturalist will also talk about local birds, fish and marine life. These cruises are also free with the price of ferry passage. They sail on Thursdays, July 7 through August 25 and depart from Cape May, NJ at 9:30 am and 1:00 pm. I love ferries! We should go on the ferry in San Francisco more. When we lived in Seattle, we would take the ferry often to the San Juan Islands; it was so much fun. I think our girls would love the experience like your kids. If we're ever in Deleware, we will have to visit!
What a fantastic and informative hub! We traveled back from South Carolina one March and used the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel. It would be really fun some year to combine that with all other ferry options. You are so correct about the ferry signifying the beginning of vacation. Thanks for this enjoyable and useful hub.
What a lot of fun this Hub is! Rated up and awesome!
Another one from you to add to my "must visit" list. thanks so much HBN.
I loved this hub! So much detailed info and the photos were beautiful.
I could picture your family on the ferry, you and your son cuddled on the bench and he old enough to finally be able to go off on his own a bit on the ferry. Made me think of my boys when they were younger.
Voted up and across except funny.
Gail-Congratulations on your nomination for the Favorite 14! Good luck to you. :) This is a great hub and well deserving.
I've been on this Ferry many times. You did a beautiful job with this hub. Lovely pictures. Thanks.
a greast write about the Delaware Ferry and the things to do there, may have to visit there sometime. Very informative.
God Bless
What a great sounding place and fun ferry rides. The only ferries that I have ridden are in the San Juan Islands and in San Francisco...but will put the Cape May Lewes Ferry on my list if ever in that area. Will vote for your hub in the fan faves and congratulations. Well deserved! Also up, useful and beautiful votes.
This sounds like a great place to visit and ferry rides are always fun. We have a ferry not to far from where we live. We rode on a ferry around the 1000 islands in the St. Lawrence Seaway and that was really wonderful Very good, interesting hub.
I'm seeing a trip up I-95 in my future. Thanks for the good info - and the maps. When I read your hubs, I feel like I am seeing the world from your eyes and your perspective, especially so since you use your own photos, but it really is a vacation out of my own head for awhile. Thanks for that, happyboomernurse:)
Wonderful, wonderful Hub Happyboomernurse. We had the treat of taking the New Ferry across to our Jersey side a few years back. It was Fun, except for when Lover Man sat backwards and got SeaSick! We always had a boat. But I told him not to sit that way, you know men...I drove us home. Next time I'd love to take our Bikes.
I enjoy all your descriptions of places that you have visited. Well done! Good luck in the contest!
Gail-Wow! Congratulations once more to you. Bravo. Let's see if we can get you into the tug of war contest! LOL
great job - you've got my vote :0)
Such an awesome place with beautiful pictures! I keep seing commercials trying to get people to visit Florida, Oklahoma, or California. They should be airing commercials about visiting Delaware. Thank you for sharing.
Sounds like a wonderful excuse to take a vacation. I'd love to be a passenger on foot. This hub is a wonderful resource for anyone who needs vacation ideas in this area. Congrats on being selected for the Fan Faves this week.
This sounds fantastic! I'll have to remember this for my next trip to the Outer Banks- my kids will absolutely love it!
I love the images you shot of the lighthouses and the trolley. I would love to take a trip on this Ferry! Nice job, and congrats on being selected in 14 the Fan Faves~ Good luck!

Great hub!Rated up and awesome!
Driving onto the ferry and leaving all your routine cares behind must have been a great way to start a vacation! I love ferries, and still enjoy taking one of the free ferries along the Outer Banks for a little "cruise" on a beautiful day. The Cape May/Lewes Ferry terminals sound like they have much to offer -- I'd love to visit someday.
Great pictures, too! I could just imagine curling up on a bench and enjoying that sunset!
Congratulations on your Fan Favs nomination! Good luck! It's been such a crazy summer that I haven't been on HP much lately - glad I caught your hub just in time to vote for it!
Wow...this was so beautiful. I had never knew about this place before. I also enjoy all stunning pictures here. Thanks for writing and share with us. Vote up!

Hi Gail,
thank you so much for sharing this brilliant hub which is interesting and very well presented. Your obvious hard work has certainly paid off.
Take care
Eiddwen.
Nice and informative. I can share your views since I took Staten Island Ferry a number of times, because it was free. But my best travels were Alaska Ferry, Chilean Navimag Ferry and Melbourne-Hobart ferry.
But I was moved by your description and would certainly take Cape May Lewes Ferry next time I go to New York.
This is a great hub about a great topic. Lewes and Cape May are two of our national treasures and deserve to be enjoyed by everyone.
You re really having fun visiting all these fantastic places. Wonderful!
Hi, happy ! My husband and I took the ferry over to Cape May many long years ago. It was a wonderful trip. We spent the day walking around and checking out the beautiful Victorian architecture of Cape May.
